Breast Cancer
Every 3 minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Every 8
minutes, a woman will lose her life.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women
in the U.S. and the leading cause of death in women between the ages
of 40 and 55.
Approximately 450,000 women will lose their lives to breast cancer
in the next decade. In 1998, it is estimated that 178,700 new cases
of female invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed.
Today, there is a 1 in 8 chance that a woman will be diagnosed with
breast cancer in her lifetime.
The risk of breast cancer increases with age, rising sharply after
age 40.
Breast cancer incidence is higher for women who -
Have a family history of breast cancer
Have not had their first child by age 30
Have no borne offspring
Do not exercise regularly
Have been exposed to radiation
Experienced early menarche and late menopause
African Americans have lower rates of breast cancer, but experience
higher death rates from the disease at every stage of diagnosis.
If breast cancer is diagnosed at the local stage (the cancer has not
spread), the survival rate is 94%.
The Cancer Society recommends that women regularly conduct a breast
self-examination beginning at age 20. More than 90% of all breast
abnormalities are detected by women themselves.
Women over the age of 40 should have regular mammograms. Women
should receive their first mammogram between the age of 35 and 40. |

WalkAide: A major step forward in the treatment of foot drop. WalkAide was developed by researchers at the University of Alberta. WalkAide simulates the typical nerve-to-muscle signals in the leg and foot, causing the foot to lift at the appropriate time in the walking cycle. The resulting movement is a smother, more natural, and safer gait.
