Mild to Moderate Sprains
Lace-up ankle supports – A.S.O.

Description- These supports are made of a thin nylon material with a
lace closure. Medial and lateral plastic “stays” give the orthosis
more rigidity and lateral and medial straps help prevent eversion
and inversion.
Use- The support is used during the acute stage of the ankle injury.
It is also commonly worn afterwards to aid stability or as a
precaution during activities.
When worn with a shoe, the lace-up support gives sufficient
stabilization at the ankle joint to reduce pain, promote healing and
prevent swelling.
Severe Sprains to Small Ankle fractures
“U” or Stirrup Orthoses- Air Cast

Description- Medial and lateral plastic uprights lined with either
foam or an air-filled chamber.
Use- Used during the acute phase of the ankle injury, or
precautionary use after cast or Walking Boot removal.
When worn with a properly fitting lace up shoe, the orthosis
prevents any eversion and inversion movements. Dorsi-flexion and
plantar-flexion are not limited.
Severe Sprains to Severe Foot and Ankle Fractures
Walking Boot and Controlled Ankle Motion Walkers (C.A.M.)

Description- These walkers are manufactured with rigid plastic or
metal uprights, a solid rocker sole and adjustable thick foam lining
to maximize comfort.
Use- To be worn when ankle movement must be either prevented or
limited to a predetermined number of degrees. Is used instead of a
cast post fracture or post-op due to its light weight,
adjustability, and ease of removal for observation and cleaning.
The Walking Boot is a foot orthosis that maintains the foot at 90 .
It has a rocker bottom that allows for a more normal gait pattern
while preventing any extension and flexion of the bones of the foot.
The C.A.M. walker is an orthosis with a Range of Motion ankle joint.
This allows for either a locked ankle at any degree or limited to
full movement.
Ankle Sprains to Severe Foot and Ankle Fractures
Custom Ankle Foot Orthosis (A.F.O.)

Description- Plastic molded Orthosis made from a plaster mold of the
patient’s foot.
Uses- Long-term need for ankle orthosis. Customized for a proper fit
and a greater control over any specific foot position required.
When placed in a correctly fitting lace up shoe, the foot is limited
to predetermined movements. |

WalkAide: A major step forward in the treatment of foot drop. WalkAide was developed by researchers at the University of Alberta. WalkAide simulates the typical nerve-to-muscle signals in the leg and foot, causing the foot to lift at the appropriate time in the walking cycle. The resulting movement is a smother, more natural, and safer gait.
