Foot Care - Foot Orthotics

Low Arch Feet

Low arch or flat feet are very common and often require support and weight redistribution. In most cases these feet are flexible and over pronated where the arch begins to collapse upon weight bearing. This motion can cause stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, potentially leading to discomfort and other foot problems.

While walking, the framework of the foot begins to collapse causing the arch to flatten and adding stress to other parts of the foot. As a result, over pronation often leads to plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, medial knee discomfort, post-tib tendonitis and/or bunions. There are many causes of flat feet. Obesity, genetics, pregnancy or repetitive pounding on hard surfaces can weaken the arch and cause over pronation. When symptoms develop and become painful, walking can become awkward and add stress to the feet and calves.

Lynco Orthotics can provide comfort and protection for flat feet. Posted Lyncos should be chosen to support the arch and provide medial rearfoot posting to prevent over pronation. Footwear should also be examined to ensure there is a proper fit. Footwear with a firm heel counter is often recommended for extra support and stability.

Medium Arch Feet

People with medium arch feet have a lot to be thankful for. Because their arches are higher than those with flat feet, but not too high, they are often biomechanically efficient. Those with medium arch feet are less likely than others to have common foot problems such as metatarsalgia or heel spurs, but thousands with medium arches still suffer from foot pain. Orthotics can help support and protect medium arch feet.

While walking, those with medium arch feet efficiently transfer pressure from the outside of the heel, rolling inward along the side of the foot and then to the forefoot. However, they are still susceptible to foot conditions caused by improper fitting shoes or repetitive stress injuries from everyday pounding. To comfort medium arch feet and prevent injury orthotics should be used to support the longitudinal arch, absorb shock forces and provide cushioning.

Lynco orthotics provide support, comfort and protection for medium arch feet. Lynco styles with neutral heels should be chosen to support the arch and provide proper balance. For those with medium arches and ball-of-foot pressure, Lynco styles that come with metatarsal support are recommended to relieve pressure at the forefoot.

High Arch Feet

High arch (Pes Cavus) feet are characterized by an elevated arch, causing the heel and toes to turn slightly inward in a supinated position. High arch feet are often rigid or semi-rigid. When walking or exercising, shock is disproportionately absorbed by the heel and the ball-of-the-foot.

While walking or participating in athletic activities, poor shock absorption can lead to repetitive stress problems, including pain in the knees, hips and lower back. Foot problems often develop in the heel and forefoot such as heel pain syndrome, plantar fasciitis, arch strain, metatarsalgia and claw toes.

To comfort a high arch foot it is critical to absorb shock forces, provide cushioning and transfer pressure from the heel and ball-of-foot to the midfoot. Lynco's unique longitudinal arch support helps bring the ground closer to the foot by filling in the arch cavity to create an equal distribution of pressure during the gait cycle. To reduce pressure at the ball-of-the-foot, Lyncos with metatarsal pads are often recommended for those with high arches.

WalkAide: A major step forward in the treatment of foot drop. WalkAide was developed by researchers at the University of Alberta. WalkAide simulates the typical nerve-to-muscle signals in the leg and foot, causing the foot to lift at the appropriate time in the walking cycle. The resulting movement is a smother, more natural, and safer gait.
